Replacement of boots of drum brake mechanisms of back wheels

Remember that brake boots are subject to replacement only in a set and at the same time on both wheels of the bridge - replacement of blocks of only one of brake mechanisms leads to violation of uniformity of the grabbing effort and loss of course stability of the car during braking.

Do not forget that the dust produced in the course of wear of frictional material of blocks may contain noxious to health asbestos - at all do not blow off it compressed air and do not inhale. At service of brake mechanisms it is necessary to put on a protective mask or a respirator. Do not use for washing off of brake dust solvents on an oil basis - wipe components of brake mechanisms only with methyl alcohol or a special cleaner.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Remove the brake drum (see the Section Removal, check of a state and installation of reels of brake mechanisms of back wheels).
2. Without hurrying and observing all necessary precautionary measures, clear a drum, a board and boots of the brake mechanism of brake dust.
3. Measure the residual thickness of frictional overlays of boots in several points. If at least one of boots is worn-out below an admissible limit, it is necessary to replace them in a set (on both wheels). Boots are subject to replacement also in case of identification of oil traces on them, lubricant or brake fluid.
4. In case of identification of signs of uneven wear of frictional slips or traces of hit on them of oil / brake fluid before starting assembly of the mechanism, define a source the leak/reason of operation of a boot and eliminate malfunction.
5. The description of the procedure of replacement of brake boots is provided in the following paragraphs. If no defects are revealed, install into place the brake drum (see the Section Removal, check of a state and installation of reels of brake mechanisms of back wheels).

6. Mark the provision of components in a drum of the brake mechanism, paying special attention to an order of placement of an expansion wedge of the adjusting mechanism, a razzhimny level and various springs.

7. Remove cups of the directing springs of boots for what wring out them flat-nose pliers down and develop on 90 °.

8. Having serially taken off boots from the lower axes, weaken a tension of the lower coupling spring, then unhook it from both shoe assemblies.

9. Release the top ends of boots from pistons of the wheel cylinder - try not to damage piston cuffs. Disconnect a driving cable of the parking brake from a back boot. Now shoe assembly can be removed from a board of the brake mechanism complete with a razzhimny level.

Do not squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake until boots are not established into place. For fixing of pistons wind assembly of the wheel cylinder outside with an elastic bandage tape.

10. Try to remember the adjusting provision of all components, then disconnect a spring from an expansion wedge of a razzhimny level and remove it from shoe assembly.

11. Disconnect the top coupling spring and, release from a razzhimny level, take off a back boot.
12. Take an expansion wedge (try to remember its adjusting situation), then remove a razzhimny level and unhook the pulling together spring.
13. Check all components for existence of signs of wear and mechanical damages. Replace defective parts. Both coupling springs are subject to replacement without fail, regardless of their state. In spite of the fact that frictional slips in principle can be acquired in an individual order, authors of the present manual recommend to make replacement of worn-out boots assembled.
14. Turn off rubber boots back and check the wheel cylinder for existence of signs of leaks and mechanical damages. Estimate freedom of movement of both pistons. Information on capital repairs of wheel cylinders is stated in the Section Removal, capital repairs and installation of supports of brake mechanisms of forward wheels.
15. Slightly grease with special brake lubricant contact surfaces of a razzhimny level and the executive lever of the parking brake.
16. Connect the pulling together spring to a forward boot. Hook on the opposite end of a spring for a razzhimny level which then bring to a landing groove of a forward boot.

17. Fill an expansion wedge on the regular place between a forward boot and a pusher of the adjusting mechanism. Track correctness of installation of components.

18. Connect the top coupling spring to a forward boot. Hook on the second end of a spring in an opening of a back boot having made sure of correctness of landing of hooks of a spring, fill a back boot in a fork of a razzhimny level. Track correctness of gearing with a level of both boots and the executive lever of the parking brake.

19. Establish a spring between an expansion wedge of the regulator and a forward boot.
20. Before installation of shoe assembly carefully wipe a surface of a brake board and slightly grease with high-temperature brake lubricant or the anti-taking sealant all its surfaces contacting to boots, paying special attention to pistons of the wheel cylinder and the lower axial knots of landing of boots. Do not allow hit of lubricant on surfaces of frictional slips and working walls of a drum.
21. Shoot the elastic bandage film from the wheel cylinder and start shoe assembly on the regular place.
22. Connect a driving cable to the executive lever of the parking brake, then fill the top ends of boots in grooves in end faces of pistons of the wheel cylinder.
23. Connect the lower coupling spring to boots, then get the lower parts of boots on the lower anchor knots.
24. Tap boots for shrinkage them on a brake board, then establish anchor fingers and the directing springs, having recorded the last cups.
25. Establish into place a drum of the brake mechanism (see the Section Removal, check of a state and installation of reels of brake mechanisms of back wheels).
26. Repeat the procedure for the second brake mechanism.
27. Having replaced all set of boots, completely release the parking brake and make adjustment of a working gap between surfaces of frictional overlays of boots and a working wall of a drum. Adjustment is made by squeezings of a pedal of a foot brake to a complete recovery of pressure in system.
28. Check serviceability of functioning of the parking brake, in case of need make the corresponding adjustment of its drive (see the Section Adjustment of the Parking Brake).
29. In conclusion check the level of brake fluid in the GTTs tank.

Full efficiency of braking is reached only after final extra earnings of new brake boots. Avoid sharp braking on the first hundreds run kilometers after replacement of components of brake mechanisms.
