The catalytic converter - the general information and precautionary measures The catalytic converter represents the device, highly reliable, simple on a design, which in itself does not need any service. Nevertheless it is necessary to draw the attention of readers to some important points.Petrol models a) Do not fuel the cars equipped with the catalytic converter ethylated at all - the lead which is contained in it is besieged on a surface of the working element of the converter made of valuable metals, gradually reducing efficiency of functioning of the last and over time leading to an exit it out of operation; b) Pay due attention to regular service of components of power supply systems and ignitions; c) In case of admissions of ignition it is necessary to refuse operation of the car, or, at least, to minimize its use until the cause of defect is not removed; d) You do not make start of the engine of the car at all by its towage as at the same time not burned down fuel will accumulate in the converter where later can ignite and put a working element out of action; e) Do not switch off ignition at high turns of the engine; f) Emergence of a light smell of hydrogen sulfide at the first operational phase of the car equipped with the new catalytic converter is quite natural and should not cause concerns (use of fuel of bad quality leads to increase in intensity of a smell); g) Service life of the catalytic converter at normal operation of the car usually makes from 80 000 km (50 000 miles) to 160 000 km (100 000 miles) of a run. Petrol and diesel models h) Do not use any additives to fuel; i) At emergence of the dense blue smoke on an exhaust demonstrating burning out of motive oil, operation of the car should be suspended; j) Remember that the working temperature of the catalytic converter is very high - be careful when performing any works under the car, do not park the car on the platforms covered with combustible materials (a dry grass, fallen leaves, etc.); k) Remember that the catalytic converter is the fragile device - handle with it extremely with care. |
